Quanah Parker rose to the status of a prominent war-chief by the early 1870s, when several U.S. Gwynne's Empire of the Summer Moon is both a superb work of history and a fast-paced, gripping narrative on par with the some of the smartest historical fiction on the market. This is the story of Quanah Parker, the half-breed Quahadis Comanche (Gwynne informs us that the Quahadis were the most reclusive and warlike of that whole reclusive and warlike people), son of the famous Indian abductee Cynthia Ann Parker (“the white squaw” as she was nicknamed when it became common knowledge that she didn't want to be “rescued” from her captors) and a Comanche brave. A glance at the very Nonfiction Bestseller list we're dissecting this time around seems to confirm the worst: three of the top slots are occupied by wide-margined 100-page pamphlets of no intellectual merit whatsoever. The gods of reading must be watching out for me this time around, however, because I drew a winner, a book that would have stood out against far, far stiffer competition: S.C. Fewer and fewer adults are reading at all, and those who are have definitely grown lazier over the last four or five decades. After all, the latest reading-polls of adult Americans are not promising. GwynneScribner, 2010 I naturally looked at this whole endeavor with trepidation.

In the book, Novalee has a thing about sevens. Even the plotline of Willy Jack Pickens, while somewhat censored, remains intact and delivers sufficient comedy and emotion in turn. The complete absence of Benny Goodluck is most notable, though admittedly he wasn’t a central character for most of the novel.įor the most part, however, the book’s general plot comes across nicely on the screen. Some minor plot points didn’t make the cut and some of the many characters from Sequoyah had to be combined or removed altogether. The book is fairly long and some alterations were necessary to condense it to a two-hour feature film. Author Billie Letts has a way of crafting words and characters that left me with a feeling of utter warmth and safety. With my renewed desire to make progress on my piles of unread books, I recently picked up Where the Heart Is and finished it within a day. The book was waiting for me at Lifeline Bookfest last year and I couldn’t resist. Naselli describes seeing Koons’ take on a classic female nude bath scene, writing, “t is not as if I ever liked the piece, but I didn’t quite have the language to reject it either.” That is, until she saw it again with fresh eyes after reading Nochlin. Writer Mara Naselli recently described how her experience viewing Woman in Tub by Jeff Koons was transformed by having read Nochlin. A question like the following, for instance, is still pressing: “How are women artists positioned in relation to an erotic imagery created out of male needs and desires and enacted on the symbolic terrain of woman’s body?” This is a question that viewers still need to grapple with at any major art museum, so that Nochlin’s analysis of the female form in art remains relevant nearly fifty years later. When such a beloved writer's voice is stilled, you really do feel more alone, less armored against the world. For those who don't know the novel, Heartburn takes place mostly in an elite Washington, D.C., world of journalists and politicians and is a roman à clef about the break-up of Ephron's marriage to reporter Carl Bernstein, of Watergate fame. Some of its jokes haven't aged well, such as wisecracks about lesbians and Japanese men with cameras, but the pain that underlies its humor is as fresh as a paper cut. I've read Heartburn three times since it came out in 1983. It's sentimental to say so, but when such a beloved writer's voice is stilled, you really do feel more alone, less armored against the world. We didn't have to tick off all the ways we needed Ephron's tough wit to help us through things. My friend and I locked eyes over our margaritas and nodded. " I'm so pissed off," this friend said, echoing Meryl Streep's words at Ephron's memorial service in 2012. I met a good friend for dinner the other night and told her I was rereading Nora Ephron's novel, Heartburn, which has just come out in a 40 th anniversary edition. There is apparent consensus in the underlying ethical foundations of the debate, with all commentators seeming to endorse the values of corporate social responsibility and gender equality. The gendered marketing of children’s toys is under considerable scrutiny, as reflected by numerous consumer-led campaigns and vigorous media debates. A large photograph on a little shelf-easel.
